Contabo VPS Review 2026: Tested, Rated & Compared
Last updated: August 2026 · Overall rating: 9.4/10
Contabo has spent two decades building a reputation on a single idea: sell more hardware for less money than anyone else. For VPS buyers that makes it one of the most interesting — and most misunderstood — providers on the market. This review covers what you actually get, where the compromises are, and who should buy it.
Ratings breakdown
| Category | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | 10/10 | Consistently more RAM, cores and storage per dollar than rivals |
| Performance | 9.2/10 | NVMe options and modern AMD hardware on current plans |
| Locations & network | 10/10 | European, US and Asian regions including Tokyo and Singapore |
| Support | 8.4/10 | Knowledgeable, but ticket-first with limited phone availability |
| Ease of use | 9.0/10 | Clean control panel; plans are self-managed unless you add management |
What you actually get
Contabo's VPS range is built around generous resource allocations: where many budget hosts sell 1–2 GB of RAM at the entry level, Contabo's tiers step up quickly into multiples of that, paired with NVMe or SSD storage and traffic allowances that most small projects will never exhaust. Their VDS line sits above the standard VPS plans and assigns dedicated CPU cores rather than shared ones — a useful middle step if you've been bitten by noisy-neighbour performance elsewhere but aren't ready for a full dedicated server.
Where Contabo compromises
Nobody sells hardware this cheaply without trading something away, and it's worth being clear about what:
- Support model. Tickets and email, answered competently but not instantly. There's no round-the-clock live sysadmin on chat like Liquid Web offers, and phone support is limited.
- Self-managed by default. OS updates, security hardening and monitoring are your responsibility unless you buy a management add-on.
- Provisioning speed. Deployment is not always the instant, one-click experience the big cloud platforms have trained people to expect.
- Setup fees on some plans. Factor any one-time fee into your first-year total before comparing headline prices.
None of these are dealbreakers for a technical buyer. All of them matter if you were hoping to never touch a terminal.
Contabo VPS vs the alternatives
| If you want… | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum hardware per dollar | Contabo | Nothing else comes close at this price point |
| Fully managed, hands-off service | Liquid Web | 24/7 human support and full server management |
| Low latency in Japan / East Asia | Contabo (Tokyo) | See our Tokyo hosting guide |
| Guaranteed dedicated resources | A dedicated server | Compare options in our Top 6 rankings |
Verdict
9.4/10 — the best value VPS on the market for technical users. If you can administer a Linux box (or will use a control panel), Contabo gives you hardware that costs two to three times more elsewhere. If you need someone else to run the server, buy managed hosting instead and pay for the privilege.
